About Chain Tree

The Wayanad Chain Tree is a historical and cultural landmark located in the Wayanad district of Kerala, India. The history behind the Chain Tree is associated with a local legend from the 18th century. According to the legend, a tribal chieftain named Karinthandan discovered a secret route through the dense forests of Wayanad. The British colonialists wanted to exploit this route but feared that Karinthandan might reveal it to others. They treacherously killed Karinthandan, and his spirit is said to have started haunting the area. To contain his spirit, a chain was placed around the tree where he was hanged. The Chain Tree stands as a memorial to this legend, and the chain wrapped around it is believed to keep Karinthandan's spirit at rest. It is a symbol of the region's rich history and its connection to the indigenous tribes and their struggles during the colonial period. Please note that this is a local legend, and historical records may not fully corroborate this story. Nevertheless, the Chain Tree remains a significant cultural and historical attraction in Wayanad.
